The National Road Transport Hall of Fame is a community based, volunteer project dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Australia's road transport heritage. Initiated by the Road Transport Historical Society Inc. formed after a public meeting in 1992, the Hall of Fame building opened on 31st July, 1995 as the visible extension of the work and collections of society members. The concept is to show vehicles as they were during their working lives, including modifications and adaptations used to make the vehicles suitable to the long distances and harsh environment they operated in. Until the 1980s many roads, including highways, were unsealed, corrugated ribbons stretching across the Australian deserts which challenged man and vehicle at every turn. Roads were frequently impassable after heavy rains, and long stretches without fuel, water or mechanical services needed to be overcome.
The vehicles on display include trucks, fire engines, carters vans and heavy machinery. Some have been restored but most remain 'as is' when they were aquired, which fits in with the strategy of the museum to show working vehicles.
The Hall of Fame has also acquired, through the Northern Territory Government, an excellent collection of vintage and veteran vehicles which were housed in the Stuart Auto Museum, many restored by Dave Simpson.
The display is housed in the Kurt Johannsen Pavilion, and includes a 'T' Model Ford utility, military vehicles, a 'B'-Model Mack truck, a 1954 side valve Ford flat tray truck, steam engines, photographic displays and much more. For the general public, and particularly the enthusiast, the 'Hall of Fame' is an educating and interesting place to visit. Open daily 10am, to 5 pm. Adults $5.00 Children $2.50 (6-14 yrs) - Membership Forms are available.
