Alice Springs West. Ellery Creek Bighole. Ellery Creek Bighole - Western MacDonnell Ranges

Ellery Bighole
Lizard Rock is opposite the turn-off to Ellery Creek Bighole.

42km from the Namatjira Dve - Larapinta Dve junction and 2 km north of the road is the Ellery Creek Bighole, a popular picnicking and swimming area.
Ellery Creek was named by explorer Ernest Giles in 1872 in honour of a Voctroian astronomer. In the 1880s Ellery Creek Homestead was built south of the gorge, and in the 1950s and 60s Ansett operated a chalet near the gorge. Both are now gone.
A word of warning, the water temperature gets colder with the depth of the water, so don't dive deeply.
