ABOUT BATEMANS BAY AND AREA
Fishing town on the south coast of NSW. Lobsters and oysters can be bought in season. River cruises on the Clyde River. Houseboat hire. Visit the Birdland Animal Park and follow the native wildlife and rainforest trail. Take a cruise on the Clyde River to Nelligen or visit the Batemans Bay Markets held at the Lobster Pot Arcade on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. A short drive south will take you to Mogo which recreates a 19th century goldmining town.

Batemans Bay was named after Nathaniel Bateman in 1770 and is a fishing port surrounded with dense forest.
The first European settlers to the region established "Runnymede", a magnificent homestead beside Runnyford Creek although the original was destroyed in the bushfires of 1904, it was rebuilt and can be seen from the bridge over the creek.
Batemans Bay was surveyed and subdivided in 1841 and a Post Office opened in 1860. Like establishments further north were founded on Red Cedar, Batemans Bay's origins were in timber and also Oyster farming.
Around 1850, gold was discovered at Mogo, some 14km. south of Batemans bay, and a mini-goldrush ensued with several hundred diggers scrambling to the goldfield. The reconstructed village of Mogo represents in detail the diggings around 1850.
Baatemens Bay is the nearest seaside town to the Canberra, making it a popular holiday destination for residents of Australia's National Capital. It is also a popular retiree haven, but has begun to attract young families seeking affordable housing and a relaxed seaside lifestyle.
Beaches, mountains, and a host of craft shops and galleries make Batemans Bay a year round holiday destination.
