Coastal fishing town at the mouth of the Richmond River in northern NSW. Beaches, national parks, Cedar forests. the name comes from the aboriginal "bullenah" meaning 'plenty of oysters'.
Shelly Beach is an observation point for humpback whales which migrate from June to September and there are usually dolphins bouncing along the horizon. The safe beach has rock pools and a toddlers wading pool. A naval and maritime museum displays many relics including a balsa raft sailed from South America in 1971.
The 'Big Prawn' will be seen at the southern entrance.

Located on the Pacific Ocean north of Sydney it is a major touring centre for Byron Bay, Casino and Evans Head region, it is also central to many National Parks, and only 110km. south of the Gold Coast.
Ballina is renowned for its fishing and swimming.
It is also recognised for its moderate year-round temperatures and friendly rural atmosphere.
Timber-cutters seeking cedar were among the first settlers and the banks of the river were a rich source for them. Today it is a well established dairy and sugar-cane area.
Ballina is also home of the 'Big Prawn', one of Australia's best known Big Things which will be seen on the south side of the town on the left as you enter.
