Small town on the highway and turn-off point to popular Byron Bay. It was originally called 'Bangaloe', believed to come from the local aboriginal word for 'low hill', and was renamed in 1907. Timber cutters established a camp on the banks of Byron Creek in the 1840s but it wasn't until the 1880s that a town appeared on the site. Regional hub for a dairy, fruit and vegetable industry. Many art and craft shops. Walking trails, market on last Saturday monthly. |
