A short drive south will take you to Mogo which recreates a 19th century goldmining town. Batemans Bay was named after Nathaniel Bateman in 1770 and is a fishing port surrounded with dense forest. The first European settlers to the region established "Runnymede", a magnificent homestead beside Runnyford Creek although the original was destroyed in the bushfires of 1904, it was rebuilt and can be seen from the bridge over the creek. Batemans Bay was surveyed and subdivided in 1841 and a Post Office opened in 1860. Like establishments further north were founded on Red Cedar, Batemans Bay's origins were in timber and also Oyster farming. Around 1850, gold was discovered at Mogo, some 14km. south of Batemans bay, and a mini-goldrush ensued with several hundred diggers scrambling to the goldfield. The reconstructed village of Mogo represents in detail the diggings around 1850. Beaches, mountains, and a host of craft shops and galleries make Batemans Bay a year round holiday destination.
