On the Murray River halfway between Cooma and Jindabyne it takes its name from the aboriginal 'berri' meaning 'bend in the river'. Near Lake Eucumbene, trout fishing is a popular pastime. It is the administrative centre of the Snowy River Shire and was first settled in the 1860s by Scotsman William Oliver.
