The name derives from the aboriginal word 'bunawalbu', meaning 'bloodwood trees', and the first European settler in the area, J.D. McLean, a Scotsman, established the 'Bunalbo' or Duck Creek station. McLean brought sheep from the Hunter Valley in 1841 during the depression. He later became a major pastoralist and the Treasurer of Queensland.
