Declared an historical town by the National Trust, Braidwood has its origins in gold. In the
mid 1800s, deposits were found with the largest find being 170kg in 1869. With the volume of the
precious metal followed bushrangers preying on escorts and individuals, and Braidwood developed
a reputation of being one of the most dangerous towns in the colony. This is all part of a colourful past now and today Braidwood is a pretty town which maintains much of its atmosphere from its heady days of the mid 1800s. A verandah lined shopping strip, sturdy buildings like the old courthouse, and a number of boutique shops, galleries and cafes make the main street one of the most attractive in the country. Its historic aspect has seen it used as a film set for such Australian movies as 'Ned Kelly' starring Mick Jagger (1969), 'The Year My Voice Broke' (1986) and 'On Our Selection' (1994). Braidwood is a wonderful destination or detour if you are visiting the area and you will be made most welcome. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES:
