Outback mining centre in western New South Wales. Major art centre
and home of the late artist, Pro Hart. Broken Hill is at the centre of a large wilderness and desert area in the far west of New South Wales, although it has more affinity with South Australia and uses Central Time rather than EST. It was founded on rich silver and lead deposits, although they are gradually being mined out and the future of Broken Hill as a mining bastion appears limited. This has not discouraged its determined population. While some have left for greener pastures as the mines close down, those remaining are looking to tourism as the growth industry of the town's future. An Information and Interpretive Centre at the corner of Blende and Bromide Sts. has modern 'state of the art' displays and dioramas depicting various stages of development of the city and the surrounding region. Ph: 08 8080 3560. 8.30am. to 5pm every day except Christmas Day. Email: tourist@brokenhill.nsw.gov.au. There are several major art galleries to visit, and a 'Living Museum' trail has been established over a drive of some 40km., which takes in historic and natural attractions, lookouts, and is well signposted. A number of displays have been created in a park opposite the Information centre and represent mining, sculpture and art. Visitors to Broken Hill can participate in a tour of the School Of The Air, and the Royal Flying Doctor Base as well as the many natural attractions which will be found in the area.
