Canowindra lies 30km. north of Cowra and is a town with a colourful past and
diverse present.
The escapades of infamous bushranger Ben Hall, include his daring 3 day occupation of Robinson's Hotel in the main street. In more recent times Canowindra has gained recognition as the 'Balloon Capital of Australia'. More flights take place from Canowindra than anywhere else in Australia. The calm, clear skies, magnificent scenery, and the absence of major power-lines and low flying aircraft, are ideal for balloonists. The opportunity to avail yourself of this style of flight should not be missed by any who savour memorable holiday experiences. Besides day flights, there are weekend and extended packages for visitors to the town. In addition to its fame for ballooning, and the exploits of bush-rangers, recent fossil finds of international significance have been unearthed in the district. The town has modern amenities including a motel, caravan park, swimming pool and clubs. The Canowindra Hotel offers traditional hospitality and facilities for balloonists and visitors to the town.
