As the largest city along the Newell Highway, Dubbo offers visitors a full range of attractions and amenities. At the same time it is still small enough to allow you to experience real country hospitality and friendliness. Situated approximately midway between Melbourne and Brisbane, Dubbo is the ideal place to have a relaxing break during your journey. This, coupled with the large range of activities, ensures your stay is not only enjoyable but memorable and interesting as well.
The highlight of your Dubbo stay and the star attraction along the Newell is without doubt the world famous Western Plains Zoo. This unique open range zoo offers a large variety of animals from throughout the world living and playing in large natural surroundings. There are no bars to spoil your views as the animals are separated from visitors by a cleverly concealed moat system.
In the past few years there have been many changes to the Zoo as part of a continuing upgrading of facilities and exhibits. Included amongst new exhibits is the Black Rhinoceros, whilst a new elevated platform allows visitors to view Koalas at eye-level. Even if you have been to the Zoo before you will find that a second visit is more than worthwhile and interesting.
After visiting the zoo be sure to allow yourself time to experience some of the other attractions on offer in Dubbo.
The Old Dubbo Gaol is an extremely popular attraction. The scene of countless incarcerations as well as eight hangings, the Gaol was decommissioned in 1966. It was reopened in 1975 as a major tourist attraction. The Gaol now serves as a stark reminder of our often harsh and violent past. Whilst at the Gaol you can marvel at life-like animated prisoners who tell their story of imprisonment. One of the prisoners, Thomas Moore, was hung in 1897 and you can hear his story while he waits in the condemned cell. Also on display is the hangman's kit, the gallows, the solitary cell, the padded cell, the prison hospital and kitchen as well as numerous other interesting and fascinating displays. On display at the Dubbo Museum visitors will find a varied and interesting range of colonial and rural artefacts. For those interested in artefacts of a different nature, the Dubbo Military Museum (part of Dunoon Tourist Complex) has working models of W.W.2. vehicles, tanks and aircraft on display. As well, the complex offers the outdoor activity 'paintball'.
You'll take a trip further back in history with a visit to Dundullimal.
The historic squatters homestead was built in the 1840's and the buildings and grounds allow you to relive the squatters life of yesteryear.
A beautiful and peaceful Jinchilla Gallery and Gardens you can relax in a magnificent garden set amidst a natural pine forest. Within the gardens a log cabin houses a gallery featuring many works of art. Also enjoy Yarrabar Pottery where you can watch the master potters as they transform clay into an object of beauty - the pottery from Yarrabar is exported to several countries around the world. Make sure you also take the time to visit the Dubbo Regional Art Gallery where a constantly changing range of art is on exhibition for your viewing pleasure. Landscaped parks and gardens abound throughout the city as do numerous historic buildings which feature in a heritage walk around Dubbo. Whatever you fancy, Dubbo has something for you to see and do. When it comes to finding a place to rest for the night Dubbo has a large range of accommodation for you to select from. With 30 motels, 5 hotels and 5 caravan parks, there is a room available to suit all tastes and budgets.
