Noted for its riverbank gardens and Jacorandas, wide streets with rows of wheel and flame trees, this busy commercial centre is situated on the Clarence River at the junction of the Gwydit and Pacific Highways.
There are many National Trust registered buildings including Schaeffer House (1900) which is now an historical museum, and Prentice House, now an art gallery.
Swan Island in the Clarence River is a sanctuary and recreation area, and there are several carnivals held on the river each year including the 'Bridge to Bridge Ski Race' in October and the the 'Bridge to Bridge Sailing Classic' in November.
Nearby are 4 major National Parks in the Yuraygir (50km.) Washpool (88), Bundjalung (70) and the Gibraltar Range (92).
Canoeing and rafting on the nearby rivers is popular and the Jacaranda Festival in October-November is a riot of colour.

On the Clarence River, Grafton is renowned for its Jacaranda Festival, held each October/November, and its colonial style buildings.
Discovered by escaped convict Richard Craig in 1831, he received a pardon and 100 pounds for his discovery. A Jazz and Blues Festival is held each Easter. Watersports, scenic drives and walks, golf.
