Ned Kelly victim - the old Bank of NSW

Jerilderie is situated on the banks of the Billabong Creek and takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'Reedy Place'. A modern, thriving town, with a progressive Shire Council, it is probably best known for its visit from Ned Kelly and his gang in February, 1879 when he held up the Bank of New South Wales and stole over £2,000, and took 30 people hostage overnight in the Royal Mail Hotel.
Jerilderie, one of the Riverina's prettiest towns, is well endowed with green parks and an attractive man-made lake. An enormous windmill, old 'Steel Wings', stands in Luke Park next to Lake Jerilderie. The windmill was transported in pieces from Goolgumbla Station and re-erected at its present site when the Lake was opened in 1979.
'The Willows', an historic old home, on the site of a former stone-grind flour mill operated in the late 1800's by the Wise Bros., now operates as the Four Creeks Cafe, Bar & Restaurant. Next door is the famous Telegraph Office, raided by Ned Kelly and his gang.
Jerilderie district is famous as a wool growing and Merino breeding centre. and in March each year Riverina Merino The district is also engaged in cattle breeding, dairy farming, and in growing rice, wheat, onions and tomatos(**NB), to name just a few of the diverse crops grown in this irrigation area.
Noted for its friendly people and easy-going pace, Jerilderie has excellent facilities for a short stop, or an overnight stay. A number of motel and hotels, and an excellent caravan park with units, cater for the overnight traveller. The Caravan Lodge is situated next to a modern swimming pool and sporting complex, and is flanked by a fine 18 hole golf course, green even in the hottest weather. The Club House is a great place to relax with a meal and drinks, and play the pokies.
For the person interested in horse racing, the town boasts a fine turf track which hosts the Jerilderie Gold Cup Races each September.
In season, water skiing enthusiasts can enjoy the facilities at Lake Jerilderie.
Sticky Fingers Candy Shop, located in the CBD, also operates the local Tourist Information Centre with brochures, maps and souvenirs available.

** I refuse to spell potatos, tomatos, pianos and any other plurals ending in 'o' with an 'e' just necause some Greek or Italian grower mis-spelt them on their roadside stalls some 50 years ago and it has become the incorrect 'norm'. I now see 'tomatoe' and 'potatoe' adapted as the singular in supermarkets. I veto it and hope my halo doesn't slip!
