Mittagong is at the eastern entrance to The Southern Highlands, first town in the Southern Highlands from the north, and location of the Information Centre.
With Bowral and Moss Vale it comprises the commercial centre of the region. Just south, Mt Alexandra offers extensive views over Mittagong and Bowral. Historic area with nearby Berrima a feature of the Southern Highlands. Morton National Park and Fitzroy Falls just to the south. In the town is Lake Alexandra, a man-made lake originally constructed to supply water for steam engines and now a parklands reserve. A scenic drive leads to Mount Alexander where there are a selection of walking trails through a flora and fauna reserve. The Tourist Information Centre is located in the main street of the town.
