Oberon is 45km south west of Lithgow off the Great Western Hwy from Hartley.
Surrounded by pine forests and lush grazing country it is on the Oberon
Plateau near 3 national parks. Activities include gem fossicking, fishing, bushwalking and swimming. Originally named Gwyndwr,the name was changed to Oberon, the king in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The Oberon Museum in Lowes Mount Road displays a collection of early farming implements, a fully-furnished early settlers house and much more. Lake Oberon is a popular fishing venue.
