It was originally named Bongil Bongil by the local Kumbaingeri aboriginals and its tree-lined streets and beach frontage make it a quiet, popular holiday destination with all the facilities of larger city within a few minutes drive.
To the north there is a scenic headland lookout perfect for whale-watching in the winter months with the Boambee Creek Reserve offering picnic areas and a kiosk, toilets and playground for family enjoyment.
There are numerous sporting facilities including golf, bowls, tennis, swimming and water sports. There is a domestic airport at Coffs Harbour.
