Ulladulla is a coastal resort on the Princes Highway between Batemans Bay and Nowra and the area
was first recorded when Captain James Cook named nearby Pigeon House Mountain in his explorations
of Australia's east coast in 1770. In 1822 explorers Alexander Berry, Hamilton Hume and Surveyor
John Oxley climbed its 719 metres. One of the first settlers to the area was the grandfather of
poet Henry Kendall who was born in April, 1839. Red Cedar was the incentive for settling the area and large stands were forested and shipped by steamer to Sydney. Later, agriculture and dairying became the main-stays. Nearby Milton was established as a private township in 1860, as part of a rural holding. Fortunately, many of the original buildings remain in the main street and you can visit the Post Office, Courthouse, Police Station and the Public School (1878) as well as many historic homes.
