Apart from pastoralists there were few settlers in the Wyalong district until gold was discovered in 1889. A town was prepared and impressive government buildings were erected on the eastern side of the main diggings. Those who had established homes and businesses around the main mining area preferred not to move to the new town, and so West Wyalong evolved without the benefit of town planning. Both towns now have government buildings, those of Wyalong having been classified by the Heritage Trust as being worthy of preservation.
The plains around the town are periodically flooded by numerous creeks and recent work on the major arterial highways has greatly facilitated access.
Lake Cowal is located 47km. north-east of West Wyalong. It is the largest natural lake in NSW and is important as a feeding and breeding habitat for numerous water-birds, and is a productive inland fisheries area. The lake is worth visiting by travellers with leisure time.
There are 2 caravan parks, excellent motels, and hotel accommodation for visitors. The West Wyalong Country Club has a fully grassed golf course and 2 championship bowling greens to complement its impressive indoor facilities.
Fishing, golf, swimming, tennis- there's plenty to keep you in West Wyalong.
Nearby Barmedman is the site of the Mineral Spring Pool. The pool has a total surface area of one acre and an analysis of the water indicates a high salt level, as a consequence the pool is believed to have health giving qualities - providing relief from arthritis and rheumatism.
Just one hour's drive west of West Wyalong is perhaps one of the best kept secrets - Lake Cargelligo. The lake offers yachting, power boating, water skiing and fishing, the area is serviced by two motels, three hotels and a caravan park.
