Holiday town at the mouth of the Clarence River.
The first European to visit the area was Captain Matthew Flinders, who stopped by in Yamba Bay for six days in July 1799.
A popular tourist destination, it began in the 1830s with timber harvesting and by 1861 a townsite was surveyed, and by 1862 the Clarence River Heads Post Office was completed.
It was originally named Shoal Bay.
Nearby beaches and national parks. There is a lighthouse near the Clarence Heads.
