NYNGAN - NEW SOUTH WALES

The first European to visit the Nyngan area was that prolific explorer and surveyoer, Major Thomas Mitchell, in May 1835. His party camped beside the Bogan River on ths site of what is now Nyngan.
Nyngan is the administrative centre of the Bogan Shire which is one of the state's most prosperous rural districts producing wool, wheat and beef cattle. Manufacturing industries include engineering, saw milling and services to the mining industry.
There are primary and high schools, a pre-school and a TAFE. Sporting and recreational facilities include bowls, golf, swimming, football, tennis, fishing and horse-riding.
In 1990 the town was devastated by flooding of the Bogan River with floodwaters rising to alarming levels. Around the town there are markers showing the height the river reached in various areas.
The levee protecting the town was breached and Nyngan was isolated in a sea of water. Services were cut and the majority of residents were airlifted to safety by helicopter. An Iriquois helicopter will be seen in the park near the railway station and is a reminder of the floods. It was a gift from the Federal Government which, with state government and community help provided funds to repair the damage to the town and raise the levee by a metre so the disaster can not occur again.
Nyngan has plenty of accommodation and offers warm hospitality and services on the long journey across the Barrier Hwy.
