CAPITAL COUNTRY - Around Canberra, the Nation's Capital|
To the south of Sydney, Capital Country is the area around Canberra stretching from Goulburn
in the north to Yass and Bowning in the south, then east through Canberra and across to Braidwood.
It is bordered in the north by the Southern Highlands, in the South by the Riverina and Snowy Mountains
and to the east by the South Coast.
A substantial part of the area is not in New South Wales at all as the Australian Capital
Territory sits at its centre and houses the Federal political capital of Canberra. This does ensure however,
that the district has facilities at least as good as will be found elsewhere across the country
in major capitals. Heaven forbid visiting dignitaries could not find a 5 star deluxe hotel or a
Gucci accessory to take home for the wife or mistress.
The principal towns are Goulburn, Yass and Queanbeyan. Near Yass there is a substantial wine producing area
around Murrumbateman and the drive between Goulburn and Canberra along the Federal Highway is accompanied
by a large lake to the left (which is occasionally dry) but is a pleasant diversion with parking areas to
pull over and enjoy.
Yass is a major stop along the Freeway between Sydney and Melbourne and the tiny township of Binalong, some
25km west is where notorious bushranger of the Ben Hall gang, Johnny Gilbert, is buried and the township is
well worth a stop to soak up the atmosphere of a real country town.
Goulburn is where you will find the 'Big Merino'. Australia boasts many 'Big Things' (including the egos of
politicians in nearby Canberra) and this is one of the most famous. There are also many historic and beautiful
old buildings to see and the main street has everything you could want if you need to do a bit of shopping.
To the east of Canberra, Queanbeyan is a substantial city with plenty to do. Further east, Bungendore and
Braidwood are hsitoric towns with Braidwood being a listed town by the National Trust.
Accommodation is plentiful with motels, hotels, caravan parks and B&Bs in all major centres at a reasonable
price. Capital Country is around 3 hours drive south of Sydney and there are regular trains and
coaches along the highway and an airline service to Canberra.
