The first Alice Springs Camel Farm was started by Kurt Posel, and taken over by well-known Centralian camel man, Noel Fullarton in the 1970's. It was designed to give locals and visitors an opportunity to see the role these unusual beasts performed in the 50 years prior to the railway arriving in 1929. Until then, nearly everything came to the Centre by camel train from Oodnadatta. Urged on by their Afghan masters these 'Ships of the Desert', could carry great burdens over long distances, and were ideally suited to the isolated conditions. Camels were also used extensively by the early explorers of the region.
