SYDNEY OLYMPICS 2000

OLYMPIC 2000 PAGE

Held in Sydney: New South Wales, Australia in September/October 2000.

The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney were nominated by Olympic President Juan Antonio Samaranch as "the most sucessful ever". Competition was intense and there were many surprises, disappointments and highlights, not the least the disqualification of walker Jane Saville as she was about to enter the stadium, the last second goal in the womens water polo, the world records of the Dutch swimmers Inge de Bruijnand and Pieter van den Hoogenband, Australia's win in the inaugural womens Taekwondo.
Congratulations must go to SOCOG who, despite much criticism and carping levelled at them during the pre-games period by the cynical Australian media, provided a spectacle which entertained the world for 2 weeks and put the Australian way of life before billions.
We can all look forward now to 2004 in Athens.
