Brisbane is Australia's third largest city and the capital of Queensland, 'The Sunshine State'. Situated on Moreton Bay and straddling the Brisbane River, it is a semi-tropical city with warm, clear winters and tropical summers. Halfway between the resort beach areas of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast it is a playground for swimmers, surfers and sun-bathers.
Like any major city, Brisbane has all the facilities a visitor will need. major shopping centres, a variety of restaurants and theatres, Art Galleries and Museums, easy and efficient transport services, and a host of things to do. Brisbane also has the Treasury Casino to try your luck at, and there are wildlife parks and sanctuaries. Brisbane also has a collection of unspoilt islands in Moreton Bay, and is surrounded by forests, lakes and mountains, and has a fascinating hinterland.
Brisbane began its life as a penal colony and some of the relics of the early days remain, the Old Windmill in the city centre is a reminder of those days. Early colonial architecture is well represented in George St. and the City Hall and the Treasury (now the Casino) and Old Customs House (now a gallery museum) are fine examples.
The South Bank region holds much of Queensland's cultural history. Here you will find the Art Gallery, the Queensland Museum, the State Library, the Performing Arts Centre, and a Maritime Museum. The parklands of the South Bank are a pleasant place to relax and enjoy as you explore these centres. The South Bank is opposite the city centre across the river and can be reach by the Victoria Bridge, or by rail to the South Brisbane or Vulture St. stations. (see map)
Ferries and river cruises operate on the Brisbane River there are walks and bike rides to enjoy. A visit to Fortitude Valley just north of the City Centre is a valuable experience.
