Town from which the shire once took its name before merging with the Gladstone Regional Council. The Calliope Post Office opened on 1 March 1864 and alluvial gold was mined in the area after its discovery in 1862.
Gold mining, beef, timber, and more recently heavy industry including aluminium, coal, and gas, shipping and tourism. There is an 18 hole golf course and an historic village at Port Curtis.
