There is a special feeling about reaching Goondiwindi. Best known as the home of the legendary racehorse 'Gunsynd', this green, shady border town of 4,400 people offers a warm welcome to Queensland. For those travelling north, the trip is nearly over. After a pleasant stay at one of the many modern motels, hotels or caravan parks, it is an easy half day drive through Toowoomba or Warwick to Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
Goondiwindi, at the junction of five major highways, also gives access to North Queensland, the Territory, and outback Queensland and New South Wales.
From a humble beginning as a teamsters' camp in the 1840s, the town now services one of Australia's most extensive broadacre farming and grazing regions. The MacIntyre River, fed by Glenlyon, Pindari and Coolmunda Dams, provides irrigation water for a rapidly expanding cotton industry.
A striking feature of Goondiwindi is the sense of openness and space. Wide tree lines streets give way to rolling plains intersected by timbered rivers and creeks, birds and wildlife abound.
There are peaceful spots of great natural beauty for camping swimming and fishing. For the sports-minded, Goondiwindi has a magnificent 18 hole grass green golf course, picturesque bowling greens right on the river, an olympic pool, Plexipave tennis courts, and squash courts and gym. Food lovers are well catered for by a wide range of first class licensed restaurants, B.Y.O. restaurants, cafes, and take away outlets.
Goondiwindi's warm country hospitality is a highlight of any visit.
