Roma was named after the wife of Queensland's first governor, Sir George Bowen, and is a commercial centre on the Western Downs producing wool, beef and dairy products, wheat, citrus fruit and grapes. In 1863 Samuel Bassett brought vine cuttings to Roma and began an industry at Romaville Winery which exists today. In 1872 the town was the scene of the trial of notorious bushranger, Harry Redford (Captain Starlight) for cattle stealing.
Roma was also the site of the first natural gas strike in Australia at Hospital Hill in 1900. The Big Rig Complex at the information centre documents the history of oil and gas discovery and features rigs, displays, photographs and memorabilia associated with the industry across Australia since 1900.
