The popular beachside resort of Beachport offers a perfect get-away place for
everybody. Beaches, a golf course, walks, beautiful old buildings, and modern
accommodation and facilities cater to the visitor. Settled by the Hentys in the 1830's as a whaling station it was once a busy agricultural port and is now a popular beach resort with Norfolk Pines lining its streets. An Old Wool and Grain Store in Railway Tce., features fishing and farming relics. The tiny, old Customs House has been converted into an ANZ Bank and must surely be the smallest in Australia, while the jetty is one of the longest in the state and offers a perfect opportunity to catch good size fish, or just wander and ponder. Beachport has a thriving crayfish industry and a modern fleet moored near the jetty ensures you should usually be able to obtain fresh supplies. Safe beaches are a feature of the area and a scenic drive leads to some spectacular coastline with secluded beaches. Nearby the Woakwine Cutting is an incredible gorge, hand cut through sheer rock to drain the hinterland and has to be seen to be believed. The Beachport Conservation Park and the nearby Canunda National Park s at Southend offer variety and healthy activity. Just along the coast is the Pool of Siloam, which is reputed to have therapeutic qualities due to its very high salt content. Just east of town on the Millicent Road, beside the beach, is a memorial to the first two soldiers killed on Australian soil during World War ll. Information is available from Accommodation houses and Caravan Parks and there is motel, hotel, 2 caravan parks, holiday flats and a guest house. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES: |
