Burra is located 170 km. north-east of Adelaide east of the Stuart Highway to
Alice Springs. It is off the Barrier Highway to Broken Hill and Sydney. Burra is a popular tourist destination in the Clare Valley and has a history based on copper mining, and which is well preserved in the many historic buildings which remain. In 1845, copper was discovered in the area and a town evolved around the diggings. There were in fact several small communities which made up 'The Burra', being mainly Scots, Cornish, Welsh and English. When the copper ran out in the 1880s the settlers turned to the land and wool and grain production became the staples of the economy. There are several, old mine sites around the township and museums which recall the period. Many of the buildings in the town are under the care of the National Trust, and the historic facade of the town is often used in Australia films for authenticity. Lots of galleries, mine complex, mine museum. Paxton Square cottage (1849-51). Market Square Museum. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES: |
