Historic River Port on Lake Alexandrina at the mouth of the River Murray. The Barrages which are used to control the flow of the river are a few kilometres from the town centre and well worth a look.
There is comfortable swimming in the lake, and Goolwa is a popular fishing and watersport destination.
The scenic, steam 'Cockle Train' passes through the town at weekends and during school holidays and Hindmarsh Island is reached by a bridge from near the information Centre.
The paddlesteamer 'Mundoo' operates cruises from Goolwa along the River Murray and cruises the lake and parts of The Coorong.
There is a fine golf course, and several motels and caravan parks

PLACES OF INTEREST:
Goolwa Barrages
Constructed between 1935 and '40 to control the flow of water from the River Murray, and create a barrier between the salt water of the ocean and the river, the barrages represent an amazing engineering feat only appreciated by visiting them.

Just north of Goolwa, Malleebbaa displays all facets of the wool industry from shearing to the finished product.
National Trust Museum. Ph: 08 8555 3908
Artifacts relating to the early history of Goolwa, housed in an 1870's blacksmith shop and operated by the National Trust. Maritime and period furnishings are features.
Signal Point Interpretive Centre. Ph: 08 8555 3488
Signal Point tells the story of the River Murray and includes charts, artifacts and models in addition to a restored 1808 paddlesteamer the 'Oscar W'.
A coffee lounge overlooks the wharf and terminus for the steam train which runs during school holidays.

HOW TO GET THERE:
By coach or car from Adelaide. From Melbourne, take the Fleurieu Peninsula turn-off at Callington from the South Eastern Freeway.
From Melbourne via Highway 1. Take the Wellington Ferry 10km. before Tailem Bend and continue to Strathalbyn, then follow the signs.
