Hahndorf was named after Captain Dirk Hahn of the 'Zebra', which arrived in Adelaide in 1838 with a party of emigrants
from the Eastern Provinces of Prussia.
Hahn was determined to see his charges safely settled after a voyage plagued with sickness, oppressive heat and mishap. He eventually selected an area near Mt Barker which his passengers named after him in recognition of his efforts. The Pioneer Gardens in the main street has public toilets, and there are memorials to Hahn and the pioneering families. An old windmill (1842) has been fully restored; there are several 19th century churches; Storison's souvenir shop was once the blacksmith's shop (1870); the Hahndorf Academy (1871) is now an Art Gallery; Model Train Land has all types of trains and a miniature Bavarian Village; and Misty Hollow is story book land with mini working dioramas and is wonderful for the young. Hahndorf is also the home of Beerenberg jams, chutneys and pickles and, in season, you can pick your own strawberries there, or at other farms nearby. An antique clock museum is also well worth a visit. Sir Hans Heysen O.B.E. (1877 - 1968) lived and worked in Hahndorf for 60 years and prints, and some originals, of his works can be seen and purchased. Hahndorf is also the ideal place to buy traditionally made wursts and german smallgoods, There are also museums, galleries, antiques, soaps, fabrics, and a crazy leather shop which must not be missed. Hahndorf has motels, hotels, a caravan park, bed and breakfast places and camping. The main carnivals are the Founder's Day, on Sunday of the Australia Day long weekend (Jan 26th) and, held on even numbered years in April, and the SA Doll Extravaganza. PLACES OF INTEREST:
