Maitland is located on the Yorke Peninsula north west of Adelaide and off the
National Highway (1) at Port Wakefield. It is 150 km. from Adelaide A well laid out city at the centre of the Yorke Peninsula with wide streets at right angles. It is a busy rural town with an agricultural background. An embroidery in the Town Hall was created by locals to depict the history of the area. The town takes its name from the wife of the First Lord of Kilkerran, Scotland, Lady Jean Maitland, and was proclaimed in 1872. There is a National Trust Museum containing much of the history of the area and it is a good central location from which to explore the penisula. The local war memorial includes many names of note in South Australia including sportsmen, and the father of an Australian Prime Minister. Nearby Barley Stacks winery 13km south.
