Minlaton is located in the central Yorke Peninsula, 150 km. north-west of Adelaide off the Princes Highway (1) from Port Wakefield.
Once called Gum Flat, because of the magnificent stands of trees there, the name comes from the aboriginal 'Minlacowie' meaning sweet water.
The first settlers arrived in the area in 1847 and it was surveyed and gazetted in 1876.
Pioneer aviator Captain Harry Butler is remembered here with a memorial and his aircraft, the tiny British Monoplane 'The Red Devil' are housed in the local Harry Butler Museum.
