Naracoorte is located on the Keith to Mount Gambier Road, 350 km. south east
of Adelaide and 100km. north of Mount Gambier. It is famed for its world-class
limestone caves, is one of the major commercial centres of South Australia's
south-east. Naracoorte is at the centre of an extensive sheep and cattle area and is rich in history. Architecturally serene, with abundant parks and gardens, it boasts many museums and galleries. A World Heritage Area, the Naracoorte Caves Conservation Area is located 11km. south of the town and features 3 major limestone, underground caves, Blanche, Victoria and Alexandra. The Victoria Cave, discovered in 1894, contains the world's largest find of fossilised Ice Age bones. Tours are conducted between 9.30am. and 4.00pm. daily. A $3 million upgrading and redevelopment project at the caves will open late in 1998. Other attractions in Naracoorte include the Museum and Snake Pit, open daily; the Wool Museum in the Old Mill Museum; the Mini Jumbuk award winning factory, producing wool souvenirs; the Nankervis Cacti and Pelargonium Garden in Graham St. open daily 10.00am. to 4.00pm.; and the Naracoorte Art Gallery in Smith St. Another popular feature near Naracoorte is the Bool Lagoon Wilderness Area which has a profusion of waterfowl and wildlife, with boardwalks extending over much of the reedbed area.
