Oakbank is the venue for the biggest picnic Steeplechase meeting in Australia held each year at Easter. The von Doussa and Grand National Steeples are held over a three day carnival and thousands make the fields and parks around this pretty hills town their home for the duration of the fun events. One of a string of Adelaide Hills towns including Verdun, Woodside, Gumeracha, Hahndorf and Birdwood it is located along a popular touring route near Adelaide. Coach tours operate through the hills daily and the variety and charm of these pretty villages make them a sought after residential area close to the city.
Small fruits, dairy products, wineries and a host of art and craft shops are all attractions of the hills area which has a rich German heritage.

    HOW TO GET THERE:
    From Adelaide
    Take the south eastern freeway up the hill to the Hahndorf turn-off and swing sharp left onto the Oakbank and Gumeracha road about half a kilometre towards Hahndorf.
    Pass through Verdun these and continue on to Oakbank.
    From the north, take North East Road or Gorge Road to Cudlee Creek and join the Adelaide - Mannum Road which passes through Birdwood.
    Several operators conduct tours of the Adelaide Hills including Oakbank.
