Penneshaw is the Kangaroo Island connection for the passenger and vehicle ferry
which operates across Backstairs Passage from Cape Jervis on the mainland Fleurieu
Peninsula to Kangaroo Island. It is also a major centre for touring the island and has accommodation and most facilities including car and cycle hire. There is much to see and do around Penneshaw. Nearby, on the eastern most point of Kangaroo island is South Australia's oldest lighthouse at Cape Willoughby. Built in 1852 there are now tours of the facility which offers spectacular views across Backstairs Passage. Cape Willoughby is also a noted whale watching observatory and you can often see these creatures between April and September. Frenchmans Rock will be seen at the eastern end ogf the beach and is now covered by a protective dome. An inscription was cut into it by a member of Nicholas Baudin's crew who visited the island in 1803. In 1999 the site was developed and the original inscription is now in the Information Centre, and was replaced by a replica. There is varied accommodation, art and craft shops, cafes, and walking and cycling trails in Penneshaw. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES: |
