Historic Obelisk

One of Australia's best kept secrets is the enchanting coastal township of Robe. Nestled in the lee of a spectacular, rocky cape in Gulchen Bay, it is not only a haven for the lobster fishing fleet which plies the Southern Ocean from its sheltered harbour, but also for visitors who suddenly find themselves in this romantic, historic town of yesteryear.
Robe was proclaimed in 1847, however, whalers and seamen had long sought its protected waters and early Scots and Chinese adventurers debarked there to seek their fortunes on the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields. Little of this historic past has been lost as the years have passed and a stroll along the well preserved streets will magically transport you back to the days when life was simpler and todays modern conveniences distant.
Among its prized possessions are the Caledonian Inn (1859), disappearing behind spreading creepers and providing an atmosphere much as the early settlers and mariners would have enjoyed. Many of its timbers and doors were scavenged from ships come to grief in Guichen Bay.
Karatta House, the Guichen Bay Motel dining room, the Lodge, the Bowman & Campbell Cottages, Lakeside, the Obelisk the Harbour and the buildings in the main streets are all worth visiting and provide plenty of opportunities for excellent photos
