Roxby Downs is a mining town built to service the Olympic Dam mine and provide a comfortable residential area with modern facilities for workers at the mine.
A bitumen road leads to the township from Woomera off the Stuart Hwy at Pimba and passes through semi-arid country to the west of the Flinders Ranges.
Olympic Dam is one of the richest uranium deposits in the world and byproducts of mining include copper, silver and others including gold.
The town has all modern facilities including a motel, hotel, shopping centre, service stations, takeaway food places and restaurants.
facilities include a swimming pool and gymnasium, and the Cultural Centre provides theatrical and artistic events.
