Named by Captain Matthew Flinders from the 'HMS Endeavour' in 1802, it takes its name from the bands of seaweed which he observed on his voyage of exploration. This pretty seaside town is the centre for an extensive fishing industry and specialises in crayfish (lobster), abalone and shark.
It has many buildings of historic interest and the rugged coastline nearby offers plenty of opportunities for photographers and artists.
Overland explorer Edward John Eyre made camp near Streaky Bay on his epic crossing of the Nullarbor Plain in 1840.
