Tanunda is located in the Barossa Valley 100 km. east of Adelaide and just south
of the Sturt Highway (20) between Sydney and Adelaide. It is one of the three major towns of the Barossa Valley. The area of main townscape interest is concentrated along Murray Street and the adjacent residential streets. Carob Bean trees line the main street, while large Moreton Bay Figs are set in the pavement in the southern section. There are tall gum and pines along the creek and river courses. The architectural character of Tanunda is particularly diverse, ranging from low scale early settlers cottages with verandahs through to impressive Victorian, Federation and 'Queen Ann' style homes, and larger public buildings and churches on prominent sites. The Heinemann Park picnic ground, and the arched gateway make an impressive entry to the town from the south.
