Whyalla is located at the top of the Eyre Peninsula, 380 km. north of Adelaide
and 75km. south west of Port Augusta. It is on the Lincoln Highway (Alt 1) between
Port Augusta and Port Lincoln. Situated near the north-western tip of Spencer Gulf, Whyalla is South Australia's largest provincial city, and the 'Gateway to the Eyre Peninsula'. An industrial town with steel-making and ship-building as its main productions, it also enjoys popularity as a tourist destination due to its Mediterranean climate and location on the gulf. The waters off Whyalla are the breeding grounds of the fascinating cuttle fish, a chameleon type of vertebrate which exudes stunning patterns and colours and is the subject of many studies. In recent times (2015) many have mysteriously disappeared and some put this down to the increased sightings of Great White sharke which have their main breeding grounds further south along the some coastline at Port Lincoln. Also at this time...these sharks have dispersed from that area following recent sightings of pods of killer whales. Werry Strange !!!!
