Woomera began as a rocket testing range with numerous rockets launched from surrounding desert country and dry lakes. Woomera is a restricted area with boundaries spreading hundreds of kilometres and clearly marked along the road. More recently it gained notoriety as a holding station for illegal immmigrants.
