Yorketown is inland from the south-eastern heel of the 'Leg'
which forms the Yorke Peninsula and 15 km. west of Edithburgh. It is 230km.
from Adelaide by road via Port Wakefield.
There are some 300 salt lakes around the area and until the 1930's the
area around Yorke town was a major producer of salt which was shipped from the
port at Edithburgh. During the peak year, 1918, 57,000 tons of salt were extracted
from the lakes.
Today the town is an administration centre for the southern Yorke Peninsula
and a popular touring centre. There is a motel, hotel, caravan park and bed
& breakfast establishments.
