EXPLORING THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK.

Australia's outback is massive. It comprises the centre of Australia and includes the west of New South Wales and Queensland, the north of South Australia, the east of Western Australia and the southern half of the Northern Territory.
Long distances are involved and most if the area is only serviced by loose surface roads running from highways.
Rain can make these roads impassable for long periods and you can be stuck at creek or river crossings for several days. This said, it is one of the most beautiful and challenging areas to visit.
South Australia's Outback is mainly reached from Port Augusta north along the Stuart Highway, west along the Eyre Hwy, or north east through Quorn to the Flinders Ranges, Strzelecki, Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. The north west is aboriginal land and permits are required to enter most parts.
To get to the Birdsville Track you will need to begin at Marree in the north, or Birdsville in the north east. Both are reached after long drives, much on loose surface roads, and with few facilities at either end.
Be prepared to take everything you need with you to ensure you can reach your destination at the other end. A $10 fan belt in Adelaide or Brisbane may cost you hundreds of dollars to have delivered to you in the middle of the Outback.
Ample food and water to keep you going for a few days is essential and remember, unless you have a satellite phone there is little chance a mobile will work anywhere along the road.
Just be sure you make a few wise decisions before you leave, have good camping equipment, and notify a responsible person of your departure and expected arrival times and you can relax and enjoy the wonderful country which comprises the vast Australian outback.
