EXPLORING THE SOUTHERN FLINDERS RANGES.

To reach the southern Flinders Ranges travel north from Adelaide towards Port Augusta alonghighway 1, 210km to Port Pirie. There are several turn-offs into the ranges along the highway northand you can take these short detours. Continue on to Port Augusta for a visit then return 26km back along the highwayto the Wilmington Turn-off and head east.
At the top of the ranges is Horrocks Pass, named after a popular early settler in the Clare Valley. Continue on into Wilmington, a pretty town at the northern end of the southern ranges. From here you can take theroad along the ranges to Clare and explore the Clare Valley on your return trip to Adelaide, or head east along the Peterborough Rd to visit that town and the historic settlement of Terowie on the Barrier Hwy. You can return to the ranges via Peterborough or through Jamestown, to Gladstone then north again to Melrose and Wilmington.
Turning south at Gladstone will take you to Clare and you can return via the Main North Road joining the Sturt Hwy at Gawler.
