NORSEMAN TO PERTH: The Eyre Highway (1)

    This section of the highway joins the coast south of Norseman and follows it though to Albany where you can take the direst rout stright to Perth or turn west into the Margaret River wineries region and follow the coast north through Busselton and Bunbury.

    The following summary of the road includes general information and links to some of the towns and attractions along the way

    PERTH:
    The capital of Western Australia, on the Swan River.

    FREMANTLE:
    Sister city of Perth at the head of the Swan River. It was the scene of the America's Cup Challenge in 1987.

    MANDURAH:
    A holiday resort south of Perth and Fremantle on the southern coast. First settled by Thamas Peel in the 1830's there is plenty to do with great fishing, eventa and carnivals, and places to visit.

    BUNBURY:
    Bunbury is a major coastal port with a deep natural harbour and the centre for a large grain and mineral producing hinterland. Much of Western Australia's hardwood forests are nearby.

    MANJIMUP:
    South of Perth in the hardwood forest area of WA this beautiful town has tree-lined approaches from all directions. Bunnings 'Age of Steam' Museum has an impressive display of vintage machinery and the Forest Industries Federation runs guided tours of the forest. There are also wineries, art and craft galleries and much more to do and see.

    DENMARK:
    Located at the centre of a large variety of scenic attractions and drives on the Southern Ocean this pretty town on the Denmark river is a popular destination. There is an historical museum and plenty of art & craft shops to explore and the region has many wineries open for tastings and sales. Denmark was named after naval doctor Alexander Denmark who served in the Royal Navy between 1814 and 1835.

    ALBANY:
    Albany is a thriving town and a great tourist destination for lovers of sea air and great local foods and wines. All accommodation options are catered for and visitors have a range of recreation options from fishing and golf and other sporting pursuits to just relaxing and watching the world go by from the pristine harbour. From August until October Albany is host to the migration of Southern Wright and Humpback Whales attracting whale watchers in their thousands from all over Australia and the World.

    ESPERANCE:
    Esperance will be found on the central, southern coast of Western Australia and is a popular holiday destination, and the first time you see the beach if you are heading to Perth via the Coastal Highway.
    It has a Mediterranean climate and is surrounded by National Parks, white sandy beaches and sits on an archipelago with hundreds of islands inhabited by seals, sea lions and terns. Diving, fishing, boating, sailing and sightseeing are the popular pastimes and there are many reefs and some shipwrecks for divers to explore.

    NORSEMAN:
    Norseman is at the junction of the Eyre Highway and the Coogardie-Esperance Highway. From Norseman you can take the road north and enter Perth through Coolgardie with its turnoff to the renowned gold mining and Two-Up town of Kalgoorlie, or take the southern route which passes through Esperance and follows the coast through Albany and then heads north to Perth through the Margaret River wineries area.
