The narrow neck dividing the north and south islands.
Bruny Island is one of several inhabited islands off the Tasmanian Coast and offers a relaxed lifestyle amid scenic beauty. Accessed by a 15 minute vehicular ferry crossing from Kettering, Bruny Island is 34km south of Hobart, but a world away in character.
This is an ideal place to unwind amid surroundings that have figured in Tasmania's history for centuries. Tasmanian Aborigines called the island Lunawannaalonna and the name lives on in the townships of Alonnah and Lunawanna. Later, many European explorers, including Tobias Furneaux, James Cook and William Bligh, landed here. A narrow isthmus connects the northern and southern parts of the island, which is noted for its coastal, farmland and forest scenery.
What to See and Do:
Visit the Bligh Museum, established to commemorate the 200th anniversaary of the birth of Captain, and later Governor, Bligh; the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operated lighthouse in Australia; visit the South Bruny National Park; swim, fish, walk in bush or along tracks or charter a yacht in Hobart or Kettering to cruise the d'Entrecasteaux Channel waterways.

Join an eco-cruise exploring the stunning coastline of the island and discover fur seals, fairy penguins, white wallaby and an extensive variety of birds.
Locally produced food and premium wines are a feature of the island. Try hand made fudge, chocolate, truffles, berries, cheese and fresh oysters. There are excellent restaurants and cafés scattered across the island's townships.
