Located 64 km from Hobart it is the gateway to Marion Bay, Weilangta Forest and historic Port
Arthur. Copping's fertile land has contributed to centuries of fruit growing and dairy production, with vineyards a more recent addition. Copping is a small village on the Arthur Hwy between Sorrell and Port Arthur. It is home to the Copping Convict Museum which will be seen on the left as you enter the town from Hobart. The Museum has a wonderful collection of artifacts and documents relating to the penal settlement at Port Arthur, and also provides Information, hot and cold drinks, and snacks, for travellers through the Vines & Designs cafe and souvenir bar. Copping is also the turn-off to Marion Bay on the east coast, which is the scene of a mammoth outdoor concert each December, and just back from Copping is the Wielangta Forest Drive. This scenic drive through rainforest to Orford is a wonderful experience although the loose surface road is very rough in places. There are wineries and nearby beaches and Copping is a pleasant and informative stop on the way to the Tasman Peninsula. There is a roadhouse at the Marion Bay turnoff at the eastern end of town, and some interesting sculptures will be seen around the museum including a giant mermaid.
