On the Great Lake, 110km from Launceston, Miena is the central point for keen
fishermen visiting the fabulous waterways surrounding the town. Arthurs Lake, Little Pine Lagoon, Lake Echo are within a stones throw away. Miena is a small settlement at the southern end of the Great Lake in the Central Highlands in a predominantly grazing area and with fishing and water activities as the main pastime of those who live there and the many who have holiday shacks along the lake. In 1914 the Miena Dam was built as part of the Hydro Electric Scheme for Tasmania but it is now underwater as a second dam (1922), then a third (1967) was built to raise the level of the lake even more. Not satisfied, the third dam was raised by another 6 metres in 1982. A cairn and plaque notes the different dam sites. The lakes district is famous for its fresh-water fishing and Miena is the hub for several lakes including the Great lake, Lake Echo, Arthurs Lake and the Little Pine Lagoon. Accommodation is available at the Great Lake Hotel at Miena and there is a resort at Little Pine. Work is progressing on full sealing of the Lakes Hwy but there are still small sections of loose surface road around Miena. A loose surface road leads west to Bronte Park and the west coast and another, scenic drive leads east to Poatina and the Midlands Hwy.
